Finding the Support You Need
Today we’re celebrating Lori Yares’ book coach certification!
How did you come to book coaching?
I was starting my own editing business when I found Jennie's book coaching certification program. I was so impressed I put my business launch on hold. I recognized how much value obtaining certification and taking the Business of Book Coaching master class would bring to my business and clients.
What was your experience in the Book Coach Certification program? What did you find most satisfying? What did you find most challenging?
I had an excellent experience in the certification program. I was happily surprised at what a rigorous program it was. Even more than some of my previous college courses! One of the most satisfying things about this program was how generous Jennie was in sharing her years of experience and knowledge. I think what challenged me at first was trying not to stress about finding practicum students. But seeing how supportive the other certified coaches and coaches in training were, I realized it would be okay.
What did you do to celebrate earning your certification?
Went to Dairy Queen and got a Drumstick blizzard!
What is the most valuable piece of advice you’re taking away from the training?
Since every client is different, there is no "one way" to coach. Once Jennie helps you nail down the editing mechanics, it's time to hone your coaching skills. Her program also helps you do just that. Her upbeat positive attitude kept me going when things became harried in my personal life. No one is perfect, and we are continually learning and improving. Just be honest, genuine, sincere, and willing to learn and you'll be just fine.
What are the next steps in your career? Tell us more about your coaching plans.
I'm excited to help other writers reach their writing goals. In a nutshell, I offer manuscript evals, edits, & revisions, book coaching, and blueprint work. I plan to eventually offer query, synopsis, and first chapter services. My business name is Blue Octopus Editing & Coaching. I’m on Twitter but am just starting out and need to become more active. I'm in the process of revamping my author website and also have plans to set up a newsletter and/or blog. All in good time.
I’ve signed up for Author Accelerator's referral program and have been spreading the word that I am now an Author Accelerator certified book coach. I'm also going to continue honing my skills through classes and coaching. And of course, become more active in the Author Accelerator Membership Circle!
