Getting More than You Ever Expected

Today’s success story comes to us from one of our newly certified book coaches, Heather Campbell!

How did you come to book coaching?

A few years ago, I was a writer completing NaNoWriMo when I came across Jennie and Author Accelerator. After listening to every episode of Mom Writes and visiting the Author Accelerator website way too much, I
finally decided to give the Book Coach Certification program a try, figuring that if nothing else, it would help me with my own writing.

What was your experience in the fiction Book Coach Certification program?

The program was transformative for my writing and knowledge of story. It also showed me how much I love coaching itself. The examples and exercises were particularly helpful, especially because they helped reinforce the concepts. And I had too much fun working through the practicums. Those were also the most challenging part, but I'm very glad the course has us do the practicums.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’re taking away from the training?

From a craft perspective, the most valuable thing I learned was that a good story is all about the protagonist's growth and how the plot affects them. From a coaching perspective, the most valuable piece of advice is that the writer is the god of their own story; the coach is there not to tell them what the story is, but to help them tell the best version of the story they can.

What did you do to celebrate your certification?

The certification decision came on St. Patrick’s Day, so I celebrated by drinking a stout or two. :) And telling everyone I know.

Now that you’re certified, tell us more about your coaching plans!

I plan to work with women on commercial fiction that tells women’s stories (so mostly women’s fiction and romance). I’m building my own business: The Writer Remedy, with a focus on 1:1 coaching as writers are planning, drafting, and revising their books.
